4.2 out of 5 stars 533 ratings

A completely gripping cozy mystery story, perfect for fans of Verity Bright

When a pantomime turns deadly, Iris investigates a cast of killers…

Christmas, 1923. When reporter Iris Woodmore is sent to cover the Prince of Wales’ visit to historic Winchester, she discovers more than just royal gossip.

The leading lady in Winchester Cathedral’s charity pantomime is found dead in mysterious circumstances. And the chief suspect is Cinderella’s handsome prince, played by Percy Baverstock’s younger brother, Freddie.

For the sake of the Baverstocks, Iris must investigate the murder, even though it means confronting an old enemy. And as the line between friend and foe blurs dangerously, she’s ensnared by someone she hoped she’d never see again…

Everyone's favourite amateur sleuth returns for a Christmas mystery, perfect for fans of Verity Bright, Claire Gradidge and Emily Organ

Love a good mystery? So do I.

Thanks for looking at one of my murder mysteries. I write the kind of books I love to read – and I hope you will, too.

My novels invite you to experience love, friendship, betrayal and murder through the eyes of intriguing characters living in a bygone era.

After a journey full of twists and turns, the final chapters reveal all – so you can enjoy each book as a standalone, though the characters of the Iris Woodmore Mysteries develop as the series progresses.

I’m grateful to every reader and listener who takes the plunge into the fictional worlds I’ve created.

I hope you enjoy the experience.

love Michelle

The lead actress in the Christmas play is murdered and everyone in the cast and crew is a suspect. Iris has friends who were part of the group, so she begins asking questions, using both her relationship and her job as a reporter as the reason. Iris is independent in a society that doesn’t recognize the skills she possesses. The past dogs her in her investigation. A nice mystery set in England’s past.

Iris is a news reporter struggling to make a name for herself in what is still very much a man's world. When she learns of the death of an actress from the local charity pantomime – and learns that her friend's brother is the chief suspect, she is determined to investigate… and maybe get a real story for the newspaper at the same time.

The book blurb on NetGalley sounded intriguing and I'm always looking for new authors to follow, so I requested the book. I wish I'd known then that this is the fifth book in an ongoing series, but series information was not listed on either NetGalley or Goodreads at the time.

Probably because the book is well into an ongoing series, I had a hard time getting into the story. I didn't know the characters well, or their backstories and relationships with one another, which made it hard to care very much about any of them. The story was well-written, and I would likely have enjoyed it more if I'd started the series from the beginning.

The mystery was good with several suspects to think about, but not knowing the characters very well, it was hard to narrow down my mental list. I wasn't able to figure out the solution, but with the information given within this book, I wasn't surprised when the killer was revealed. Even the motive made sense, given that character's identity.

I might go back and start this series from the first book, but I haven't decided yet, and it may depend on the book's availability through my local library system.

I really enjoy the way this series is unfolding. Its so hard to imagine women living under such strict rules and trying to break out of the norms. I simply detest Archie and now habe to wait patiently for next installment!

This book is very long and has way too many characters. It's hard to keep them all straight due to being introduced in the book so closely together. All in all, it did hold my interest and kept me reading.

During the rehearsals for a Winchester pantomime, investigative reporter Iris learns an actress has been murdered. With her friend Percy, Iris uncovers a web of deceit and danger in the snow-covered streets.

This is a menacing mystery with a hint of humor and well-developed relationships. I recommend reading the series in order, as this book contains spoilers for the previous books. The audiobook narrations was well done.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Now I read all the books, except for book3 . I suppose there is more to come asa lot of questions were left unanswered. Iris should be more careful by living her life the way she wants to she ay ruin possibilities for other women. I will be waiting for the next one.

If you are looking for a well-written, entertaining book, look no further. This entire series is delightful. The characters are likable and engaging. The plots are well developed and the mysteries are not easily solved. Looking forward to the next adventure of Iris Woodmore and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars MYSTERY & SUSPENSE GALORE - CAN'T TURN THE PAGE FAST ENOUGH TO READ WHAT HAPPENS!!!!
Reviewed in Australia on October 16, 2024
I have read the "Iris Woodmore" series from book 1 through to book 5 and I can't wait to read the next one ! My only problem is that I do not want the series to end.

I only discovered Michelle Salter recently. I love her style of mystery & suspense writing as she keeps you guessing until the last page "who did it". I will certainly continue to follow her.

The author brings to life a young woman finding her way in a changing world where until now, men have been unchallenged, dominating all spheres of women's rights and choices. Suffrage and the effects of WW1 finds post war England suffering serious changes to society, from what was to what will be. Into this unsettled world comes Iris, who has already experienced more of that life's hardships without a mother and a secure childhood.
This has made forging her independent path at odds with Edwardian England's suffocating rules applied to Family and Society expectations, and most especially to women.
For Iris, be it her choices, as a journalist professionally, as a friend or the morals of love or whom she shares that with, she struggles to fit in and often rebels with the judgement of others.

Although, Iris is not perfect, the author lets us share her struggles, failures, and successes. Although she is impatient, she strives to be true with her loyalty to family, friends or her loves. To those who wish her harm she is relentless in their pursuit often putting herself in serious peril. Even in danger she remains steadfast in righting injustices and exposing wrong doers even, when it endangers her safety.
Reading this series I really understand the term "page turner". I hope you enjoy this series as much as I have.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not evolving
Reviewed in Australia on September 29, 2024
As a series I had hoped this would evolve, but apparently not. The main character is supposed to be a non conformist, but is also painfully naive and conservative, the emotions are hackneyed and sentimental, and the authors knowledge of the period’s customs and dress is frustrating in its inaccuracy. Throw in a few Americanisms in language and the books are a bit simplistic and unrealistic.
